Getting There
By air: Franz-Josef Strauss Airport which is approximately 30km north of the city is Munich’s main airport.. Flights from most European, and international cities land here. The airport is connected to the city via the S-Bahn #1 and S-Bahn #8 trains to Hauptbahnof station and cost anything up to €8 one-way. It takes about 40 minutes and leaves every 20-minutes. Alternatively, Lufthansa run a shuttle bus to the city which leaves at 20 minute intervals and takes approximately 45min A one-way trip will cost you €9 approximately.
By train: All trains arriving at and departing from Munich do so at Hauptbahnof station in the west of the city. Munich is served well by train from other cities, both in Germany and others around Europe.
By bus: Munich is one of the stops on Busabout’s route which is very convenient for anybody travelling around Europe this way. The Europabus, which goes around Bavaria’s Romantic Road, also stops in Munich as well as the BEX BerlinLinienBus which travels daily between the two cities.
Getting Around
On foot: Getting from Hauptbahnof, the city’s main train station, to Marienplatz will take you about ten minutes. From Marienplatz most points of interest in the city are within walking distance.
By U-bahn (underground train)/S-bahn (overground train): Both the U-bahn and S-bahn have 8 lines each and getting around the city using this efficient network is easy as all lines are well signposted in the stations.
By tram: Getting around Munich via tram is a lot slower but you do get to see more on your journey.
If you are planning on using Munich’s public transport a lot, buy a day-pass (Tageskarte) priced at €4.50 for one person or €7.50 which covers two people. These tickets permit the ticket holder(s) to unlimited travel until 3am. Individual tickets for single journeys are called Einzelfahrkarte.
